Sage

Sage of Egyptian origin Using as food ingredient

Sage is known to have many medicinal properties. It has been used for thousands of years to treat ailments ranging from respiratory problems to digestive issues. It is also known to help relieve stress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, headaches, migraines, arthritis, and even cancer!

The herb sage comes from the mint family (Lamiaceae) and contains volatile oils that are responsible for its smell. These oils include thujone, pinene, camphor, menthol, myrcene, cineole, and limonene. Thujone is the primary chemical responsible for the herb’s characteristic odor.

There are two types of sage commonly sold today: Common Sage (Salvia officinalis), and Greek Sage (Salvia fruticosa). Both species contain similar amounts of thujone, but Greek sage also contains high levels of other chemicals like eugenol, linalool, and methyl chavicol.

Common Sage is native to Europe and Asia, while Greek Sage is native to Greece and Turkey. They both have similar uses and effects, although they can vary slightly depending on their origin.

Greek Sage is often used to make tea, tinctures, salves, and ointments. It is also used to flavor foods and drinks. Some people use it to make soap. In addition, it is sometimes added to bath products and cosmetics.

Common Sage is usually dried and ground into a powder before being used. It is typically mixed with honey or sugar to create teas, syrups, and salves. It is also used in cooking and baking. People who want to avoid alcohol may prefer using this type of sage instead.
